About & Nate's Story

Running for Nate — 20 Years of Community & Remembrance

Nate Boerlin was 16 years old when he died in April 2007. He was an honor student and a gifted percussionist at Kingsway Regional High School — the kind of kid who made the people around him feel something. His death, from glioblastoma multiforme, a stage IV brain cancer, was sudden and devastating.

His mother, Lauren Boerlin, did what families sometimes do when grief finds no other outlet: she built something. In Nate's memory, Lauren founded the Dragon Run — a 5K through the streets of downtown Swedesboro — and has led it every year since. That was 2007. This September is the 20th time the town has gathered to run for Nate.

Race Director Mike Hochman and the Boerlin family remain at the center of it all. This is not a race that licensed a cause. It is a family and a town that built a tradition, and kept it.

All proceeds benefit the Nathaniel Boerlin Scholarship Fund, a nonprofit that awards perpetual scholarships to Kingsway Regional High School graduates who share Nate's passions for learning and music. A portion also supports the Kingsway Education Foundation.

When you register, you're not buying a race entry — you're funding a scholarship in Nate's name.
